Project Details

Client: Highways England
Principal Contractor: A14 Integrated Delivery Team
Value of contract: TBC

Description of Works:

The supply and installation of steel sheet piles to form 2 No permanent retaining walls using the King Sheet Pile system.

The retaining walls are part of the upgrade and realignment of the existing A1 carriageway at Brampton.

Piles installed were AZ crimped pairs; king sheet piles were AZ40-700N 13.0m long and AZ17-700 6.5m – 7.5m long. Intermediate piles were AZ12-770 1.5m – 3.5m long.

Piles were installed using a telescopic leader rig which pre-augered the king piles prior to installation. Following pre-augering the piles were installed with a variable moment variable frequency vibratory hammer.

One of the walls presented the challenge of designing, supplying and installing a temporary sheet pile wall as part of the temporary works required to extend the piling platform outwards over an existing embankment to enable the leader rig to reach the permanent pile line. These piles were subsequently extracted using the leader rig on completion of the permanent pile installation works.
