Southwick Substation

Project Details

Client: Network Rail
Principal Contractor: Siemens
Value of contract: £250,000

Description of Works:

Works involved the supply and installation of AZ26-700 sheet piles 7.0m and 11.0m long to form a permanent 3 sided retaining wall to enable construction of a new electricity substation for Siemens as part of the ongoing upgrade programme to the current rail network in the Southern area.

Piles were installed to begin with using a Giken Silent Piler in Supercrush mode, but when it became obvious that this system was unsuited to the unexpected ground conditions encountered on the site, pile installation was completed using a 35t tracked excavator complete with Movax vibratory hammer.
