Chesham EM10, Metropolitan Line
Client: London Underground Ltd
Principal Contractor: Cementation Skanska
Value of contract: £501,150
Description of Works:
Stabilisation of an embankment slip on the Metropolitan Line near Chesham, consisting of the installation of 355 No PU28 steel sheet piles 9.0m long using the Giken Supercrush System with full GRB System alongside live rail traffic.
The Giken Supercrush system uses an integral augering and pressing system to enable simultaneous augering / drilling and pile pressing to take place. This enables piles to be installed in very stiff / hard ground conditions with silent vibrationless methodology. This system typically can accommodate piles up to 21m long but has the potential to be adapted for longer piles.
The GRB system comprises a power unit, a clamp crane to service the Giken and a pile runner used to transport the sheet piles to the clamp crane. All the above equipment travels along the top of the sheet piles behind the Giken.
